Some e-resources store citations in UPPERCASE-you may find examples in Historical Abstracts or Business Source Premier. If you download these references into your library then they will also appear in your EndNote library in uppercase.
You won't want these to appear like this in your Word documents so you must either edit the references into lower case, choose a style which converts uppercase into lower case (such as option 2 or 3 below) or edit your current style| so that it will convert your references accordingly.
Styles in EndNote are set up in one of three ways:
-
Leave titles as entered (e.g. APA 5th, Author-Date, and Chicago styles)
This does what is says on the tin-your citations will be entered in Word with whatever capitalization you have used in EndNote.
This is useful if you have any specific acronyms which you wish to keep in uppercase but if your references are inconsistent, then your bibliography in Word will also be inconsistent.
If you have any references which have been downloaded in upper case then they will appear in upper case in Word.
The majority of styles available in EndNote follow this template
-
Headline style capitalization (e.g. MLA, American Economic Review, Econometrica, Feminist Studies styles)
This will display your citations with each main word capitalized.
Any references completely in upper case will be converted
e.g. A Right Denied : Access to Voting for Blind and Partially Sighted People
-
Sentence style capitalization
This will display your citations with only the first word and any proper nouns capitalized-this is the preferred method for most styles.
Any references completely in upper case will be converted
e.g. A right denied : access to voting for blind and partially sighted people
The best advice is to make sure you enter your references into EndNote using sentence style capitalization-this is the method we demonstrate in our courses.
If you have a few references in uppercase in your library then you could edit these manually
However you can also edit your style to select one of the 3 options above-this removes the need to edit your references.
Accessing EndNote on the LSE network?
You first need to copy your chosen style into your H space-you may wish to create a styles folder within your EndNote X4 folder.
Got EndNote loaded on your own PC or laptop? You can just edit the style directly|
If you are accessing EndNote on a School networked PC then EndNote will be defaulting to the Central Server, Server W. You cannot edit files directly and must copy any styles you wish to edit into your H space
You must copy your desired style from W into your H space by either:
-
Navigate to W-Library-EndNote X4-Styles and select your style e.g. APA 5th.ens.
-
Copy and paste this to your H space in e.g. your EndNote X4 folder-you may wish to create a styles folder
OR
-
In EndNote apply your usual style to your library.
-
Then choose Edit-Output styles-Edit "name of style" and your style will open.
-
Do not edit the style at this stage. Choose File-Save As to save your style to your H space
-
Now you must redirect EndNote from Server W to the file where you have saved the style
-
In EndNote choose Edit/Preferences/Folder Locations and navigate to where you have saved your style e.g. your new Styles folder within your EndNote X4 folder.
-
Now you are ready to edit the style.
-
Make sure your required style is selected in your styles box
-
Choose Edit/Output styles/Edit "name of style"
-
Your style template will open for editing.
-
From the left hand side of the screen choose Bibliography-Title Capitalization
-
(You can also choose Footnotes-Title Capitalization if you are using a footnote style)
-
Select your chosen option
Leave titles as entered
Headline style capitalization
Sentence style capitalization
-
Close your style template-you will be prompted to save any changes
-
Apply your edited style to your library
