Quick Tip: Selecting Styles in Endnote

Endnote contains hundreds of different bibliographic styles for you to choose from. This allows you to automatically reformat your paper into a new style for example if you are submitting a journal article to different Editorial boards.

Styles are preset templates which allow word to display your information in different ways. These styles define how citations and bibliographies will look and have been created to conform to recognised standards, for example the American Psychological Association (APA) style. Please see our What is Harvard page| for more information on different styles for use with the Harvard method of referencing.

The default styles when you open up Endnote are:

  • Annotated
  • Author-Date
  • Numbered
  • Show All

There are two ways to select additional styles-the first allows you to select one style at a time|, so is useful if you are looking for a specific style e.g. APA 5th. The second method allows you to select a range of styles| for comparison and to examine style templates

  7. Your styles are automatically added to Endnote
  8. Close the Style Manager by clicking on the x in the right hand corner

Before closing the Style Manager you may wish to examine the style template to see further information about the construction of the style. To do this double click on any of the styles from the style manager. A message box will open informing you that you will not be able to edit the style-just click on OK and the style template will open up.

The above instructions apply to the 264 styles automatically installed.  Please see adding new bibliographic styles|, if you need to use a style that is not included.
