Quick Tip: How to cite web pages in Endnote

If you have read a journal article online e.g. via JSTOR, you should include this in Endnote as a journal article reference type. Use the web page reference type to add details of web pages you need to cite in your work e.g. the homepage of an NGO

  1. Select the Web Page Reference Type
  2. Author: consider if your page has an individual author e.g. a specific journalist on a BBC news web page item. If you cannot see an individual author, then you may need to include the institution responsible for the web site e.g. BBC News,
  3. Year: Add details of the date of publication or last update of the web page to this field, which is not necessarily the year you have accessed it
  4. City: If you can't see a specific place of publication you may wish to use the home city of the institution responsible for the web pages
  5. Publisher: This is usually the name of the organisation responsible for the web pages
  6. Access Year: Enter the year you have accessed the site only - do not enter the month and day in this field
  7. Access Date: Enter the day and month of access, but do not include the year
  8. URL: Add the web page address of the site you have accessed

If some of these details are missing you may wish to consider if the site is suitable for inclusion in an academic essay/dissertation/theses. Remember you should be citing books, journals etc in your work and not purely web sites - if in doubt check with your department.
