Quick Tip: Searching your library

Sorting your library, changing the fields displayed, and using the Groups feature all help you to retrieve information from your Endnote library, but you can also use Endnote's search options to find information from any part of a field e.g. the second or third author from a multi-authored book.

Quick searching:

  1. Use the Quick Search box at the top of the screen (not version 9 or earlier)

Complex searching:

To make your search more precise you can combine different search terms with AND, OR, NOT.

  1. From the Endnote Tools menu choose Search References or click on the toolbar Search icon or press CTRL+F.
  2. Enter the word or words for which you wish to search.
  3. Use the field drop down list to select which field is to be searched, e.g. Author, Title, Keywords. If you select Any Field they will all be searched.
  4. Define how the search term is combined with others, using the AND, OR and NOT buttons.
  5. Click on the Search button. The results of the search are displayed in the library window.
  6. To restore the full listing, that is all records, choose Show All from the References menu.

Want to limit to a specific publication year?
Select the Year field and then 'Contains' from the drop down list in order to limit the references retrieved by date of publication.

Want to search on several terms?
The default in Endnote is three search boxes  but you may wish to search on more terms for example author,  2 different keywords and year. To add more search boxed to the search window just Click on the Insert field button from the Search box

Repeating the same search regularly?
If you are repeating the same search regularly or always search on several terms, then you can change the default search setting. Click on the Set Default button from the Search box, and your search configuration will be saved for future use.

Want to save your search results?
If you have performed a complicated search or just wish to save your search results as a subset for future use, then you can save results to your H space or disk. Click on the Save Search button from the Search box and navigate to where you wish to save your results e.g. your Endnote X4 folder in your H space. Your results will be saved as a .enq file e.g. search.enq
To retrieve your results at a later date (and to rerun the search on any new items which have been added to your Library) click on the Load Search button from the Search box
