If the EndNote coding| behind your in-text citations in Word becomes corrupted in any way, then Word may no longer display the correct citation, and instead my move all your citations up or down in the document from the point of the 'offending' citation.
This can occur if you have made manual changes to your citations instead of editing them the Edit Citations button|, or if you have edited citations so that they have become adjacent to one another. In the latter case Word may have combined the coding of the separate citations into one-hence the shifting. The best advice on adding adjacent citations| is to add them at the same time into your document
Before you start:
Make a copy of your document and work on this-in this way if there are any problems you can go back to the original
Using an older version?
If you're using Endnote version X4 then you should not experience this problem and can skip straight to the next stage|. Those using older versions are advised to check their citation marker as below:
In EndNote check that the temporary citations marker is still correct-this should be a single #.
Normally this is not a problem but on occasion EndNote 9.01 adds a double ## which will result in an extra # appearing in your citations when you format your completed document.
-
In EndNote choose Edit/Preferences/Temporary citations
-
Check that the 'Record Marker Number' is appearing as #
-
If you see ## then click on the Endnote Defaults button, then click on OK
Next steps:
-
Unformat the citations in Word
-
From the Endnote toolbar in Word chose the Unformat Citations button
your end bibliography will disappear and your in text citations will appear
as e.g. {Baker, 2008#22}
-
This will allow you to find where the 'offending' citation is and to check that all other citations are in the correct place.
-
Remove the offending citation via the Edit Citations/Remove command.
-
Then re-insert the correct citation, ensuring that if you do need 2 citations together than you insert them at the same time.
-
Reformat your document via the Format Bibliography button
