What is Endnote and why should I use it?

Endnote X4 is bibliographic referencing software produced by the Thompson Scientific| company. It has two main functions

Data Storage

  • Save references to any item you have used for research or teaching
  • Single storage area for all references for easy access
  • Quality control so that all instances of the same author, journal title or keyword as saved in a consistent format
  • Ability to clump references together using the Groups feature-references can be assigned to more than one Group
  • Ability to create Smart Groups using your own search criteria
  • Ability to add keywords, course codes etc to aid filing
  • Ability to add details of which databases you have used to find materials
  • Prompts you to collect all the relevant information in one go-saving you from hunting around for 'lost' information at a later date
  • Ability to use Endnote to connect to various databases so as to add information automatically
  • Ability to import information from various database so as to add information quickly
  • Endnote databases are called Libraries and have the file extension .enl e.g. Sample.enl

Working with Word

  • Achieve consistency with automatic formatting
  • Create documents using the Harvard Method, footnotes or numbering system)
  • Create automatic bibliographies
  • Create bibliographies by specific field such as author or course code-these can also be saved in html format for creating web pages
  • Change formatting instantly to new styles
  • Format in the correct style if you are submitting your work to a journal for publication
  • Allows you to cite your work correctly, helping to avoid plagiarism

Accessing Endnote

You can access Endnote from any PC on the LSE network via the start button. Choose Start/Programs/Standard Applications/Bibliography.

Endnote version X4 is available on all Windows 7 build PCs in the School and via Remote Desktop.  Windows XP machines will have an older version of Endnote

It is recommended that you use IT Services Remote Desk Top| access for access off campus
