This page contains information about the Library's electronic course pack (e-pack) service, which digitises readings for use in Moodle| (the School's virtual learning environment).
In addition to requesting material to be digitised, you should also explore the possibilities of linking to articles in e-journals and e-books.|
Further details about the requirements for this service are available in the Requesting E-packs| document.
What are electronic course packs?
Electronic course packs, also called e-packs, are a collection of course readings selected by the teacher to be digitised because they are expected to be in high demand. The PDF files generated are accessed by students from Moodle, where they can be printed, downloaded or read online.

When is an e-pack useful?
E-packs are useful when a large number of students need to look at the same set of class readings at the same time. The readings digitised are accessible both on and off campus making it easier for your students to prepare for class without having to visit the Library.

How can I use e-pack content in Moodle?
Links to the readings can be inserted anywhere within an online course and are password protected to allow access for LSE staff and students only. The Centre for Learning Technology (CLT) have developed a reading list template file which is distributed to all Moodle editors. Full training and support is offered to assist with using the template, along with the information on how to make e-packs available.|

How is an e-pack created?
The Library's Teaching Support team processes requests to digitise course readings. Please see the information on Requesting E-packs| if you would like readings digitised. Please note that due to the high volume of requests we need to receive requests by the dates below to ensure the digitised readings will be reading for the start of the term when they're needed:
DEADLINE FOR MICHAELMAS TERM: 31st July
DEADLINE FOR LENT TERM: 31st October
Requests will be accepted after these dates but may not be ready for the start of term.

Selection of readings
Normally only readings covered by the School's HE Photocopying and Scanning Licence can be included in your e-pack because of the time and cost involved in getting copyright clearance. The licence covers a broad range of publishers from the UK|, US| and other international territories|. All material except those listed on the excluded works lists for each country can be used, up to a maximum of 5% or one chapter from a book or one article per journal issue. The E-packs Team will check your list of requested readings on your behalf.
For obvious reasons material available electronically via the Library's e-journal or e-book collections cannot be digitised. CLT offer advice on linking to e-journals| and e-books|.

Further restrictions
Readings are only available for one academic year, therefore if you wish to use an e-pack the following year, you must request the readings again. You will be contacted by email before the start of each academic year to remind you.
Please note that only the students on the specified course of study should be referred to the electronic readings. If you wish to make readings available to students on more than one course please notify us so we can arrange this.

Do I have to use the e-pack service if I want digitised readings?
Yes. Under the terms of the School's HE Photocopying and Scanning Licence we are required to report annually which readings have been digitised under the terms of the licence. Any readings scanned but not reported are illegal unless copyright permission has been sought and any fee requested paid. The School has delegated the responsibly for digitising materials to support teaching to the Library and all digitising being undertaken should be via the e-packs service.
