Further research materials

Official publications

The Library has extensive collections of Government and Intergovernmental Publications| including one of the largest European Documentation Centres| in the UK (for official EU publications from 1952 onwards.) 

Newspapers

Nexis|  - worldwide newspapers in text form only covering 1980 onwards. It is updated daily. This service is text only and does not include any images.

Times Digital Archive| 1785 -1985 - a facsimile of the newspaper including all images, adverts etc.

The British Library Newspaper Library at Colindale| has back-runs of London, British provincial and some overseas newspapers. If you need to see particular images or illustrations from back runs of newspapers then you may need to visit the British Library Newspaper Library at Colindale.


Theses

Some of the other databases mentioned previously will index theses in addition to journal articles, book reviews etc. The resources listed below will give access to the fullest UK & US bibliographic theses data.

  • EThOS - UK theses. Some will be freely available immediately, others can be ordered.
  • Index to theses - UK and Irish PhD theses. (Abstracts only).
  • Proquest dissertations and theses - USA and Canadian PhD theses. Has abstracts and a 24 - page preview for recent ones.
  • Library Catalogue - for LSE theses - PhD and MPhil are held here. Turn the "Quick limit" box to read "Theses"
  • DART-Europe - for European research theses. Full text sometimes available.
  • Senate House Library Catalogue for theses awarded by the University of London.
  • The Library Catalogue also includes listings for African, Australian, Canadian and Hong Kong theses databases.
  • The 'Retrospective index to theses of GB and Ireland 1716-1950. v.1 Social sciences and humanities' can be found in the Reference Collection Z5055.G B5

Use the Inter-Library Lending| service for theses that are not held at the LSE. (Select Inter-lending on the Library Catalogue to request items.)


Data

Our Data Library provides an extensive range of data resources for your research including Eurostat, OECD, and Eurobarometer. You will see information about searching for data and about the scope of our collections. You can also try our Data Companion in Moodle|.


Conference Papers

  • ZETOC - Index to conference papers 1992-present. No full-text, simply tells you where to find the paper concerned, such as in a book or journal.
  • ISI Proceedings on Web of Knowledge - science and technology, 1990-present.

Archives

Look at our Archives pages| to see what is available at LSE, in the UK and internationally.

Current research

LSE Research Online| is a collection of research produced by LSE staff. It often contains content which is full text and freely available. This is constantly updated.  

ESRC society today| - current research sponsored by the UK's ESRC.

OAIster| contains details of research being undertaken globally.


Organising your references

Once you have found your references, keep track of them using EndNote bibliographic software|.

Use EndNote to store and organise your references to books and journals, and to create your citations, footnotes, bibliographies and reading lists in Word.

You can also export references from many online databases directly into Endnote.
