Working papers, theses and other resources

Working Papers

Theses are one way of accessing research currently being undertaken.  Working papers are another important source.  The list below contains a selection of working paper sites for Accounting and Finance from our Delicious account.

  • Japanese Studies publications
    Working papers from STICERD, which is based at LSE, relating to Japan. Full text is available
  • RePEc: Research Papers in Economics
    RePEc (Research Papers in Economics) is a collaborative effort of hundreds of volunteers in 63 countries to enhance the dissemination of research in economics. The heart of the project is a decentralized database of working papers, journal articles and software components. All RePEc material is freely available.
  • NEP: New Economics Papers
    With many subject groupings to choose from, NEP is an announcement service
  • Lancaster University Management School Working Papers
    Lancaster University Management School publishes its own series of research working papers, many of which are available for free download.
  • Institute for Fiscal Studies: Publications
    IFS aims to put all its research findings in the public domain, either in our own publications or in other people's (ranging from peer-reviewed academic journals to newspaper articles). Most of the Institute's own publications are available free of charge online and some are also sold in hard copy. Among our own publications: Commentaries, such as our annual Green Budget, are substantial documents on current policy issues, aimed at a policy-aware audience. Reports cover similar topics, with a longer shelf life, and have a broader policy and academic readership. Briefing notes are intended to be accessible to as wide an audience as possible. Working papers are work in progress, that should not be regarded as the definitive view of the authors. Observations are brief analyses of current policy developments.

  • Research and Publications : Columbia Business School
    Search the School’s research archive to download original and innovative work by Columbia Business School’s renowned faculty experts.
  • Eprints Repository: The University of Melbourne
    The University of Melbourne Eprint Repository (UMER)is a self-archiving repository of research papers produced by members of the University of Melbourne. It includes working papers, pre-prints, book chapters, articles, theses, conference papers and inaugural lectures. All academic subjects from the Sciences, Social Sciences and Humanities are covered. The database may be searched by author, keyword or title or browsed by subject area or new additions. Users may require registration to view the full text of some items.   • Max Planck Institute for the Study of Societies Working Papers
    The Max Planck-Institut fur Gesellschaftsforschung(Max Planck Institute for the Study of Societies) conducts research on a broad range of the social sciences, specialising in the study of the governance of advanced industrialized nations in the face of globalisation and supra-national integration. The web site provides free access to the full text of all working papers published from 1996 onwards. Topics covered include: globalisation, international economics, international trade and finance, European Union integration and comparative social policy. Please note that some papers are offered in German only.

Institutional Repositories

Institutional repositories are becoming increasingly important as a source of information regarding research being undertaken by academics and students in universities worldwide.  LSE Research Online| is the LSE repository, including full text where available.

Theses

Theses are a valuable resource in terms of research.  The Library only holds LSE PhD and MPhil thesis.  These can be located via the Library Catalogue| using the follow method:

  • Search for your keywords or by the department name 
  • Use the Designation facet on the left to choose ' Dissertations, academic'

There are several databases that contain details of UK and international doctoral thesis completed or in progress.

Conference papers

  • ZETOC - Index to conference papers 1992- . No full-text, simply tells you where to find the paper concerned eg: in a book or journal
  • ISI Proceedings on Web of Knowledge - science and technology, 1990-

Primary Sources

You might also be interested in using primary sources, especially when it comes to doing your dissertation. Primary sources include newspapers and statistical data (see following sections)

Newspapers

  • The Library takes a selection of newspapers though few go back beyond 1981.  The main exceptions are  The Times, , the Financial Times, Le Monde and Die Zeit.  These are available in microfilm.  The Times is also available electronically via the Times Digital Archive 1785-1985
  • A wider range of full-text newspapers going back to 1981 is available electronically via Nexis.  This does not contain  images, statistics, graphs, charts and advertisements. To see these, you will have to use the microfilm versions or go to the British Library Newspaper Library (see below)
  • The British Library Newspaper Library at Colindale has back-runs of London, British provincial and some overseas newspapers

Special Collections

Within the Library there are a number of special collections that may be of interest:

  • Pamphlet Collection.  There are a number of collections that make up this collection overall.  Some of those relating to the 19th Century have recently been digitised and will be available for use in the near future
  • Government
  • Intergovernmental Organisations (IGO)
