To School

As you leave Butlers Wharf turn right onto Gainsford Street.

Take the first turn to the right along Lafone Street cutting up the steps past 'Captain Tony's pizzeria and down the steps on the right into Tower Bridge piazza.

Pass the fountain heading for the opposite corner of the square towards Tower Bridge.

Leave the piazza onto Shad Thames and pass under Tower Bridge.

Walk along the river bank (the Queen's Walk) past City Hall, HMS Belfast, Hays Galleria, towards London Bridge. Before you get to the steps for the bridge, you will see a small path to your left, signed, the Thames Path. Go down this path and turn right at the end.

Pass Southwark Cathedral on your left, follow the road to the left then turn right towards the Golden Hind.

Pass the Old Thameside Inn into Clink Street and continue past the Clink prison museum.

Pass under Cannon Street bridge and then turn right past the Anchor and follow the river west.

Keep following the river, passing under Southwark bridge and on past the Globe Theatre, the Millennium footbridge and Tate Modern gallery.

Keeping to the river path continue under Blackfriars rail bridge.

Keep going and you will find yourself passing under a second bridge, Blackfriars. Immediately after the bridge, climb the stairs on your left side and cross the river.

At the other end, you will pass some steps on your left (don't take these) and then follow the path round to the left as it goes down to the Embankment.

Walk along the Embankment (this follows the river) for about 10 minutes, keeping an eye out on the right, for a crossing and an underground station, Temple.

Take this crossing, and pass Temple station. Climb the steps in front of you to reach Temple Place, cross this street and continue walking up the hill along the right hand side of Arundel Street.

When you reach the top, cross the Strand (ahead of you) towards the Gladstone memorial statue and then turn immediately left and cross to the 'island' between the church (St Clement Danes) and Australia House. Turn right.

At the end of the 'island' is a crossing to the Aldwych. Turn left and you will pass a post-office on your right.

The next right, before the Nat West bank, is Houghton Street, home of the School.

At the main entrance you can get a map showing the School buildings and the links between them.

Leave Houghton Street past the Garrick, turning left into the Aldwych.

Take the first crossing on your right onto the 'island between Australia House and St Clement Danes Church.

Cross the next road, the Strand, straight ahead of you and go down the hill on Arundel Street.

At the end of Arundel Street cross Temple Place and walk down a few steps to pass by Temple underground station.

Cross the Embankment and turn left along to river.

In about 5 minutes on your right you should see Blackfriars Bridge. Cross the river on this bridge.

At the end of the bridge there is a pub called Doggets. By the pub there are steps down to the walkway by the river. Go down these steps and pass under the bridge.

Carry on under the next bridge and continue along the river past the Tate Modern gallery, the Millennium Bridge and the Globe Theatre, passing under Southwark bridge and staying on the river path.

Pass the Anchor and Vinopolis into Clink Street, under Cannon Street rail bridge.

At the end of Clink Street pass the Golden Hind and go around the building behind it, passing Southwark Cathedral on your right.

Pass under London Bridge and take the small path on the left, after about 30 meters. This takes you back to the riverside.

Turn right at the river and follow it past Hays Galleria, HMS Belfast and City Hall towards Tower Bridge.

Pass under the bridge into Shad Thames and immediately on you right enter Tower Bridge Piazza.

Pass the fountain and head up the steps in the very opposite corner of the square.

Turn left at the top past 'Captain Tony's pizzeria and down the steps to Lafone Street.

Turn right and then left onto Gainsford Street.
By Bus
Journey time of 25 to 35 minutes
The 188 from the junction of Tanner Street with Druid Street will bring you directly to the Aldwych. The RV1 takes a 'leisurely stroll' along the river from the same place. It is best to get off just at the north end of Waterloo bridge.
By Tube
Journey time of 20 to 25 minutes
Cross Tower Bridge and pass the Tower of London to take the tube west from Tower Hill to Temple.
