Management Science Group

Page contents > About the Group | Programmes

Management science, in its various related disciplines, has been taught at the School for over 50 years. The Management Science Group, previously known as the Operational Research Group, has always operated at the forefront of these disciplines, indeed the School was one of first higher education institutions in Britain to offer a masters degree in the subject.

About the Group

The Group consists of eight full-time academic staff complemented by visiting professors, visiting fellows and a research officer.

The Group has an Advisory Board composed of many of the heads of OR and other analytic groups in business and government in the London area. The advice of the Advisory Board is regularly sought on questions of direction and priorities, and its members support the Group in many ways.

Distinguished Speakers in Management Science

Beginning in 2009, as part of its research seminar series, the Group has invited each year one highly distinguished academic in the field of Management Science to speak on their area of speciality. The Distinguished Speakers in Management Science to date are:

  • Professor Uriel Rothblum (2011)
The Alexander Goldberg Chair in Management Science
Technion - Israel Institute of Technology
  • Professor Yinyu Ye (2010)
Professor of Management Science and Engineering
    Stanford University
  • Professor James Orlin (2009)
The Edward Pennell Brooks Professor of Operations Research
    Massachusetts Institute of Technology

Programmes

The teaching programme of the Group consists of the following degrees:

BSc in Management Sciences

Ths programme is a broad-based first degree. Its compulsory core consists largely of Operational Research techniques and methods but it also provides a solid foundation in other related disciplines, such as economics, accounting, information technology and management. Further information on the BSc in Management Science|.

MSc in Management Science
  • Operational Research stream
This stream typically recruits students who have achieved good results in first degrees with a strong quantitative component. The core of the programme consists of an introduction to the approach and the main classical techniques of operational research; students can also choose from a range of options taking particular methods to a more advanced level.
  • Decision Sciences stream
This stream is the newest of the Group's programmes. It has a 'core plus options' structure similar to that of the Operational Research stream, but in this case the core consists of an introduction to the model-based methods developed with operational research for structuring problems for which subjective information is indispensable.

Both streams have a choice between (1) an MSc dissertation or (2) a summer project which normally involves a placement with an outside organisation. Further information on the MSc in Management Science|.

PhD in Management Science

The Group also has a small number of full-time research students, pursuing research within the interests of the members of the academic staff. Further information on the PhD in Management Science|
