Management science, in its various related disciplines, has been taught at the School for over 50 years. The Management Science Group, previously known as the Operational Research Group, has always operated at the forefront of these disciplines, indeed the School was one of first higher education institutions in Britain to offer a master's degree in the subject.

The Group| consists of six full-time academic staff complemented by visiting professors and visiting fellows.

Programmes
The teaching programme of the Group consists of:
MSc in Management Science

Operational Research stream
This stream typically recruits students who have achieved good results in first degrees with a strong quantitative component. The core of the programme consists of an introduction to the approach and the main classical techniques of operational research; students can also choose from a range of options taking particular methods to a more advanced level.

Decision Sciences stream
This stream is the newest of the Group's programmes. It has a 'core plus options' structure similar to that of the Operational Research stream, but in this case the core consists of an introduction to the model-based methods developed with operational research for structuring problems for which subjective information is indispensable.
Both streams have a choice between (1) an MSc dissertation or (2) a summer project which normally involves a placement with an outside organisation. Further information on the MSc in Management Science|.
