Thesis: 'BBC Becoming Digital: Information Re-Packaging In The Age Of The Web'
In the next years the expansion of digital images and video, particularly on the web, will count for a large part of the current information growth. This research focuses on how the media industry is managing its content in the digital age. The management of media assets are transforming current roles and constraining their use due to particular technologies. However, the reflexive character of information growth processes whereby attempts to manage and reduce information often backfire.
In the case of the media industry, as there are more delivery platforms it is becoming more complex to produce and organize the metadata for digital content distribution. Both the ‘quality’ and ‘clarity’ of the metadata should be as good as the content itself in order to be retrievable and searchable.
The subject of study is one of the world’s biggest media organizations: the British Broadcasting Corporation and specifically the BBC Vision division. Our research will focus on the “Metadata Journey”. This means that we will research upon the ways that content and metadata are interrelated from the conception of a project all the way to its delivery and archival.
