Research in the Department of Mathematics

Page contents > Discrete Mathematics and Algorithms | Financial Mathematics and Control Theory | Game Theory

The Mathematics Department is well known for its research excellence within its areas of specialization, which lie in the applications of Mathematics to the Social Sciences and in Discrete Mathematics.

The Department has 17 research staff working in three broad disciplines: Discrete Mathematics and Algorithms|, Financial Mathematics| and Control Theory| and Game Theory|. Research is carried out over a wide range of specific areas, which reflect the diverse interests of our staff. A complete list of all our researchers and their research interests can be found on the relevant web page for their discipline.

All staff in the Department were entered for the 2008 Research Assessment Exercise (RAE). The result was encouraging: 45% of the work submitted was deemed to be either internationally excellent or world-leading, with almost all the remainder being internationally recognized. The most recent work produced by members of the Department can be found on our Publications page|

Until recently the Department was home to the CDAM Research Report Series, which began life as the Mathematics Preprint Series in 1991. In 2009 the decision was taken to bring the series to an end, with more than 370 titles having been produced over the years. A list of published titles| and information on how to obtain a CDAM Research Report is still available on the web.

The Department hosts a number of research seminars during term time. These include the Seminar on Discrete Mathematics and Game Theory|, which covers many of the research areas in the department: Discrete Mathematics, Algorithms, Game Theory, and Probability Theory; and the Joint Risk & Stochastics and Financial Mathematics Seminar|, which combines the Department's strengths in Financial Mathematics with expertise from the Department of Statistics. In addition there are also seminars aimed at the Department's research students in all disciplines. Details of all our seminars can be found on our Research Seminars web page|.
