I joined the LSE in 2007 as Chair in Media and Communications. I am Director of the Department's PhD Programme.
Research Profile
My research interests broadly include Social and Cultural Theory, Ethics and Political Philosophy as well as Corporate Communication, Communication Theory and Discourse Studies.
My research focuses on the nature of mediated public discourse from an ethical and political perspective. I have published extensively on the moral implications of the media in contemporary public life, particularly on the link between mediation, social action and cosmopolitan citizenship. Part of my research further addresses the intersection between politics, culture and corporate discourse. I have also researched the mediation of youth politics as well as the workings of pedagogic discourse and its implications on youth identities.
Current Research Interests
My main interest is in media ethics, broadly understood as the moral implications of the media in contemporary public life. In my work on the mediation of suffering, I have shown how global mediation selectively distributes ethical sensibilities towards distant others, thereby sustaining hierarchies of place and human life. My current project, on the mediation of violence, addresses the question of how we can live together under conditions of mediated proximity but also difference and conflict. I propose an alternative way of exploring the link between media, ethics and globalised public life - one that is inspired by classical thought both in terms of methodology (Aristotelian phronesis) and theory of public life (Aristotelian virtue ethics and Stoic cosmopolitanism). My purpose is to turn reflexively towards our own assumptions about who the 'we' of the West is and how this 'we' relates to others- other cultures and types of public, in and through the media ('Media and Violence. Virtue and the Ethics of Public Life', forthcoming Polity Press). At the same time, my work further focuses on a different intersection of public discourse and contemporary culture, namely on the changes in corporate identity and strategic communication under conditions of mediation. In my co-edited volume Media, Organisations and Identity (forthcoming, Palgrave), I explore the specificity of mediated communication in the corporate world and its impact on organizational culture, identity and image.
Teaching
I am Director of the PhD Programme in Media and Communications|, leading the compulsory seminars for our research students (MC500|). Our programme has some 35 students registered and has a target of an annual intake of 6 new students each year.
I also co-teach the Critical Studies in Media and Journalism (MC422|) optional course, with Polis Director Charlie Beckett, and contribute lectures to selected courses for the MSc Programmes offered by the Department. I supervise PhD students at the LSE. Their topics include the mediation of fundamentalism in conservative political rhetoric in USA; the European public debate on Islam; the mediation of death in news channels; the organisational dynamics of Al Jazeera English. Applicants with backgrounds in social science disciplines including media studies, communication and discourse studies, political science and sociology are encouraged to apply.
External and Internal Commitments
I am Honorary Professor at the Copenhagen Business School. I was Professor of Media and Discourse Studies at CBS until July 2007, where I directed the CBS Media Hub|, and the international network for the Ethics of Mediation, MediaDemos. I am currently part of the International Advisory Board of the 'Responsible Business' research network based at Copenhagen Business School (2009-12).
I am also Peer Reviewer on the Qatar National Research Foundation and of the AHRC Peer Review College. Finally, I am visiting Professor at CELSA-Sorbonne, Paris, Michealmas Term 2011.
