Research Topic: The Blog and (In)visible Silences in the South Korean Blogosphere

My research interests lies in new media, particularly the blog, social networking sites, and mobile phones. My current research focuses on how collective social pressure imposes new constraints on interaction and the expression of opinion by bloggers in the socio-political context of South Korea. Using participant observation, on- and offline interviews, supplemented by an explorative online survey, I explore how the politics of visibility – the complexity of technical aspects of 'public' and socio-psychological aspects of 'private' blogging – impacts self-expression and disclosure. Also, I aim to explore bloggers use silence as an active strategy to cope with or act on the social pressure.
