EI Latest

Professor Christian Lequesne departs from the EI
The first LSE-Sciences Po Alliance Professor, Christian Lequesne, leaves LSE and the EI at the end of August after two successful years. Funded by the French Ministry of Foreign Affairs, the role aims to further develop the successful working relationship between the two institutions. He has been central to developing the successful Franco-British Europe Dialogues lecture series sponsored by the French Embassy in London and to the launch of the joint masters Double Degree in European Studies with Sciences Po, with the European Institute receiving its first cohort of students this October. Professor Lequesne is returning to Paris to become the Director of CERI, Sciences Po. We wish him all the best in his new role. We also look forward to continuing to work with him on a number of projects and to him regularly returning to London! The next LSE-Sciences Po Alliance Professor is Marie Mendras. She will be based in the Government Department from 1 October. Read Prof Lequesne's Briefing interview here. 

EI staff member awarded Chevalier de la Legion d' honneur
Maurice Fraser, Senior Teaching Fellow within the European Institute, has been awarded the Chevalier de la Legion d'honneur. This world-renowned Order is the highest decoration in France and has been awarded to Maurice for services to France and to Europe. He will collect the award at an Autumn ceremony at the French Ambassador's residence. Congratulations Maurice!

EI doctoral students present paper
On 16 July, Alison Johnston and Costanza Rodriguez d’Acri, both research students at the European Institute, and Dr Waltraud Schelkle presented a paper on ‘Coordinated wage adjustment in EMU: Is there a large-small divide?’ at the research workshop ‘Labour Markets and EMU’ which took place at the European Trade Union Institute in Brussels. Professor Iain Begg also presented a paper on four case studies- the UK, France, Germany and Sweden.

New project for Professor Iain Begg
The Foreign and Commonwealth Office has commissioned Professor Iain Begg to produce an expert study on how a refocused EU budget could support and accelerate the process of the shift to a low carbon economy.

EI doctoral student gives a lecture at the College of Europe
On 17 July, Sotirios Zartaloudis, a PhD student at the European Institute, gave a lecture at the College of Europe in Bruges titled "Employment and Social Policy in the European Union". The lecture was part of the 15th Intensive Seminar on the EU and focused on three main topics: the historical development of the EU's social and employment policy; the types of EU social and employment policy; and their implications on national social and employment policy. Sotirios would like to thank the Seminar's organisers and the College of Europe for the invitation and the very stimulating experience.

Appointments and Departures

Professor Christian Lequesne leaves the EI at the end of August and returns to Sciences Po.

Publications

Professor Iain Begg has written a chapter entitled ‘Governance for sustainable development’ which appeared in a volume edited by Christophe Degryse and Philippe Pochet entitled Social Developments in the European Union and was published by the ETUI-REHS.

Staff News

Members of the Institute's academic staff travel worldwide to take part in conferences, workshops and retreats. Some of this month's highlights are listed below. 

Professor Nicholas Barr will be speaking at the World Demographic Association's 4th World Ageing and Generations Congress 2008, in St Gallen 28-30 August.

Dr Vassilis Monastiriotis will present two papers at the 48th Congress of the European Regional Science Association in Liverpool between 27–31 August. His papers are on “Spatial disparities in Bulgaria” and ”Endogenous Weight Matrices in Spatial Economic Analysis”.
