UCSD-LSE Exchange

LSE and UCSD have an informal exchange programme. PhD students from LSE can visit for a term or more at UCSD, where they will be treated by the Department there as regular students (though they will not be official students at UCSD). At UCSD they have use of the library and attend courses and seminars, for which they will satisfy the ordinary UCSD requirements and receive grades, which will then be counted after review by the LSE Department towards the LSE departmental PhD requirements.

Students from both places stay registered at their home institutions, pay fees at their home institutions, and receive credit at their home institutions for their work while abroad. Unfortunately there is no money associated with the programme. But UCSD staff and students are always very helpful to LSE students in finding suitable accommodation and often some ways can be found to help with the cost of the fares to get there.

This is an exciting opportunity since the UCSD faculty in Philosophy and Science Studies provide a nice complement to what is available at LSE. Notable in particular, besides the range of offerings in Science Studies and the chance to pursue philosophy of biology or mix with the strong Southern California philosophy of physics community, are UCSD's strengths in history of philosophy, in moral and political philosophy, and in the philosophy of the neural and cognitive sciences.
