The years immediately following the end of the Cold War gave rise to the notion that the world was entering yet another American Century. This short term view has now proven to be just that. The next century will be decidedly Chinese and the rest of the world needs to adjust to this fact fast.
Martin Jacques is Visiting Senior Fellow at IDEAS. He is a writer and broadcaster. He has been a visiting professor at Renmin University, Beijing, Aichi University, Nagoya and Ritsumeikan University, Kyoto. He was editor of Marxism Today from 1977-1991 and deputy editor of The Independent from 1994-96. He is also a former Sunday Times and Times columnist. He co-edited the book The Forward March of Labour Halted? and co-edited and co-wrote The Politics of Thatcherism and New Times. He was a co-founder of the think-tank Demos. He is a columnist for The Guardian.
This event celebrates the publication of his latest book When China Rules the World: the rise of the middle kingdom and the end of the western world|.
