My current research embraces two distinct but related fields: (i) social policy in developing countries and the use of income transfer programmes as an anti-poverty strategy, and (ii) conservation and sustainable development, focusing on the Amazon region.
Income or conditional cash transfer (CCT) programmes have become popular in Latin America and my research examines their impact upon the poor and on longer-term social development patterns in Brazil and elsewhere.
My research into environmental policy focuses on the issue of avoided deforestation, or 'reduced emissions from deforestation and degradation' (REDD) in Amazonia in the context of ongoing negotiations for the next commitment period of the climate change framework (UNFCCC) after 2012. In particular, it assesses the effectiveness of payments for environmental services (PES) as a form of compensating small producers and encouraging forest conservation and sustainable development.
Both broad research areas are linked by the fact that they entail the participation of grassroots groups in programmes designed to achieve socially and ecologically desirable outcomes through the provision of suitable economic and other incentives.
