David Lane's activities focus on problem structuring techniques for strategic analysis, in particular system dynamics, strategic modelling and systems thinking. His theoretical work centres on the contribution that system dynamics can make to the formalisation of certain concepts arising in social theory and the underlying social theoretical assumptions of system dynamics. His methodological interests concern the nature of generic structures, the uses and limitations of different mapping techniques, the links between system dynamics and PSMs and the history and methodology of OR/MS and systems science. Application areas for this work include: the dynamics of project management; the creation of marketing strategies for cinema films and healthcare management, e.g. problems with performance measurement and patient flow pathways through acute hospitals. His current work in this area is in the modelling of healthcare associated infections.

David Lane is Reader in Management Science. He specialises in strategic analysis using system dynamics and systems thinking. He works interactively with groups of senior managers to help them express their ideas in the form of a system dynamics-based simulation model. The model and the facilitated process help managers to think through the long-term policies of their organisation.
He has degrees in mathematics from Bristol and Oxford Universities and a Doctorate in mathematical modelling, also from Oxford. He was a consultant in Shell International and a marketing manager in Shell UK. He was on the faculty of City University Business School. He has consulting and executive experience in a wide range of organisations.
At LSE, he has received two teaching awards and was elected as an Academic Governor, serving from 2004 - 2010. In 2004 he became a Fellow of the Operational Research Society. In 2007 he was awarded the System Dynamics Society's Jay Wright Forrester Award.
In 2010 Dr Lane was appointed as an Advisor to the Munro Review of Child Protection for the Department for Education. In 2011 he became President of the System Dynamics Society.
