Research summary > [Click to expand]

Gerben Bakker's research focuses on the long-run development of sunk costs, market structure, technological change and productivity growth in service industries between the Industrial Revolution and today, linking three different methods and three different scales of observation: he uses business history, strategy and management science to examine organisations, applied industrial economics to investigate the evolution of industries and the economics of growth and development to access the productivity effects on the entire economy. The research assesses Britain's performance vis-a-vis the United States and continental Europe. Bakker has completed a research project on the long-run comparative development of the entertainment industry in Europe and the US. He has published widely on this topic, and on live entertainment and the motion picture industry in particular, in business and economic history journals. Other research interests include the economics of intellectual property rights and the changing organisational structure of multinational enterprise in the music industry since 1945.
