Dr Engelke is an expert on Zimbabwe and on religion, especially Christianity. He conducted extensive fieldwork on African Churches in Zimbabwe in the 1990s. More recently, he has been conducting research on Christianity in England, with particular attention to Christianity in the public sphere.

Dr Engelke also has an interest in human rights and has served as an expert witness in dozens of asylum appeals by Zimbabweans in the UK.
