Research summary > [Click to expand]

I have carried out social research on a single community in Cyprus, at three contrasting periods. First, when it was an ethnically mixed village, with a largely prospering Greek Cypriot population, and a smaller number of Turkish Cypriots. This was in 1968, during a period of rising prosperity for Greek Cypriots generally. In earlier years there had been fighting at many points in the island between the two peoples, but it had not disrupted this community.

The second research period was in 1975 and focused exclusively on the Greek Cypriots who were now internally displaced within the Greek administered zone of the island, and dispersed in at least 25 sites. It was then, a study of the earliest phase of displacement, when destitution threatened, and disorientation and doubt prevailed.

The third study period was from 2000 to 2004, and was essentially a study of how the Greek Cypriot IDPs had managed their long exile, and had in many cases transcended the difficulties of 1974-1975. This period also allowed some work to be done with the Turkish Cypriots of the original village, who had not been displaced. In this period, there was increased contact between individuals of the two groups. I developed an interest in public health issues of IDPs and refugees in this period.
