Dr McGovern's interests are in economic sociology, the sociology of work and labour markets, and international migration. He has recently completed a major co-authored, ESRC funded, study entitled Market, Class, and Employment (Oxford University Press, 2007). Among other things, this book examines an issue that has of been of interest since he began his doctoral research back in the 1980s: the impact of new employment practices on traditional patterns of social inequality. Currently, he is developing an innovative comparative project on international migration and social mobility in Britain and the USA.
