Research summary > [Click to expand]

My current research project investigates how political representatives justify their positions either in favour of or against the use of the referendum device. It uses computer-based analysis (ie, Alceste and ATLAS-ti software) to map the arguments of politicians in several successive parliamentary debates in France and Britain over the use of the referendum in the context of high-level politics: the ratification of the Maastricht Treaty (1992-1993), the European Constitution (2005) and the subsequent Lisbon Treaty (2008). The main objective here is to address three areas of interest to political scientists, independent research groups and potential users of computer-based methods alike. The first pertains to questions concerning how bicameral parliamentary contexts affect the ways in which politicians of lower and upper houses conceive of their own roles and those of the people in political decision-making. The second relates to the comparative issue of how, if at all, different political traditions or institutional cultures might variously inform and affect debates on direct participation. The third area of interest relates to recent developments in computer-based methods and the question of whether these are of use in political science research for analysing copious textual data.
