Alex Bryson (b. 1963) joined the National Institute of Economic and Social Research as a Research Director in October 2008. He was previously Research Director at the Policy Studies Institute where he worked for nineteen years.
He is also a Visiting Research Fellow at the Centre for Economic Performance, LSE. Bryson's research focuses on industrial relations and labour economics. His current research grants focus on union effectiveness, union effects on workplace performance, performance pay and its impact on firms and workers, worker wellbeing, job creation and destruction, collective bargaining structures in Britain and Germany, the impact of recession, and the impact of the Troubles on investment in Northern Ireland. He is a member of the WERS 2011 Research Team and Steering Committee. He has published his work in many books and journals, including the British Journal of Industrial Relations, Cambridge Journal of Economics, Economica, Human Relations, Industrial and Corporate Change, Industrial Relations: A Journal of Economy and Society, Industrial Relations Journal, International Journal of Human Resource Management, Journal of Labor Research, Oxford Bulletin of Economics and Statistics, Scottish Journal of Political Economy.
Between 2005 and 2009 he was an editor of the British Journal of Industrial Relations. In 2005-2006 he was the Wertheim Fellow at the Harvard Law School and the National Bureau of Economic Research.
