Professor Howell has experience in politics of aid and development policy, civil society and development policy, governance civil society, aid and security. She also has experience of gender, labour relations and the politics of policy processes. She has are expertise in china - with a particular emphasis on the social and political dimensions of market reforms - and has also carried out research in India, Mozambique, Kenya, central Asia and Afghanistan. She has advised and consulted widely for international development agencies such as UNDP, ILO, Ford Foundation, Department for International Development UK, the Foreign and Commonwealth Office, Save the Children and Christian Aid.
