Professor Hunter's research interests lie in the economic development of Japan with particular reference to the late 19th and early 20th century. Recent research has focussed on the development of the female labour market and the history of economic and business relations between Britain and Japan. Current research interests are: the development of communications and communications policy in Japan, material incentives and consumption during the Second World War, and the economic history of natural disasters.
