My current research embraces two distinct fields:

(i) Low carbon development / energy policy – I am an editor and author of the textbook „Low Carbon Development: Key Issues” for Earthscan, Routledge. The book was published in March 2013. It explores key issues relevant for low carbon development in both developing and developed countries. In addition, I have conducted research on climate-friendly energy such as wind energy and hydropower in Europe and Asia. I am interested in researching how Asian countries can develop low carbon energy while reducing the social implications such as the relocation of people or the loss of livelihoods due to hydropower dams.

(ii) Education / education policy - I am interested in the political aspects of education. My main focus is on citizenship and the development aspects of education. I am exploring the effect of education reforms for primary education in developing countries and why a political discourse can help understand some of the shortcomings of education policy in African countries. I am interested in analysing how these global discourses of education reforms are understood in local discourses. In line with this, I am the Guest Editor of a Special Issue for Policy Futures in Education entitled “Political Discourse, Citizenship and Education”, which focuses on political discourse, citizenship and education in developing and developed countries.
