Kristian Ulrichsen's research interests focus on the political, economic and military trends in the Gulf. These include the growing internationalisation of the Gulf and the emergence of multiple competitors for regional assets; the current strategic climate in the region and the ongoing conflict in Iraq; the connection between energy and national security and the links between homeland, regional and global security networks; and the moves towards economic diversification and liberalisation in the six member-states of the Gulf Cooperation Council. He also researches on Britain's past role in the historical development of the Gulf and the interaction between warfare, colonialism and nationalism in shaping the creation of the modern state of Iraq between 1914 and 1921.
