Research summary > [Click to expand]

My current research focuses on the West's central role as a descriptive and normative concept across intellectual disciplines, notably the humanities, civilisational studies and international relations. I seek to explain the reasons for the West's self-doubt and its increasingly hesitant claims for an unique and irreducible content; and to evaluate its continuing significance as a concept in the changing geopolitical and economic environment of the post-Cold War era and a 'multipolar' world. I also examine the extent to which the West's identity is based on its self-understanding as a normative 'project' of universal reach, and ask whether the EU constitutes a project of comparable scope and ambition.

France; Greece; UK; Europe; Italy
