Dr Robert Barnes holds a PhD in International History from LSE. His doctoral thesis, entitled 'The (UN)Equal Alliance: The United States, the Commonwealth, the United Nations and the Korean War, 1950-1954', examined US-Commonwealth relations at the UN during the Korean War and its immediate aftermath. It focused on explaining the conditions under which the Commonwealth members were able to unite and effectively constrain American policy at the UN. In pursuit of this goal he conducted extensive research at a wide range of archives in Britain, the USA, Canada, Australia and India.

Dr Barnes' work has already begun to attract scholarly attention and in April 2010 he had the article 'Branding an Aggressor: The Commonwealth, the United Nations and Chinese Intervention in the Korean War, November 1950-February 1951' published in the Journal of Strategic Studies. He is currently transforming his thesis into a monograph for publication.

Dr Barnes' future research aims include further investigation of a number of themes touched on in his past research. These include: 1) US relations with the UN; 2) Personal diplomacy at the UN; 3) the Anglo-American 'special' relationship; and, 4) the role of the Commonwealth during the early Cold War period.

Countries and regions to which research relates:

USA; East Asia; Commonwealth; UK; Korea
