I have six areas of research interest. (1) The development of criminological theory (2) The expansion of imprisonment; (3) Ideologies and structures of social control systems; (4) Political crime and other more general connections between crime and politics; (5) The causes of gross human rights violations (genocide, torture etc.) and possible ways to prevent them. (6) Follow-up research on the themes of my current book, States of Denial : (a) the ordinary public's reaction to information about atrocities and suffering; (b) the institutions of Truth Commissions and the International Criminal Court.
