Spend your summer at a world-class institution
Courses taught during the Summer School are based on regular LSE undergraduate courses, and taught to the same standards by leading LSE faculty. Lecturers are experts in their chosen fields and committed to teaching with academic rigour and contemporary relevance. Our faculty are actively involved in academic research and many act as advisers and consultants to companies and Government bodies.
Mix with students from all over the world
At LSE you will be given the chance to interact with students from a diverse range of backgrounds and cultures, both in and out of class. You will be exposed to a variety of insights and opinions, and form friendships and networks that span the globe. In 2011 we welcomed students from the top universities around the world, including Harvard, Yale, Bocconi, Copenhagen Business School, EDHEC and many more.
In 2011, more than 4,400 students from over 115 countries studied at the Summer School. See where they came from in the map below.

While the majority of our students are undergraduate students, we also welcome a large number of postgraduate students and professionals each year. In 2011, over 500 professionals from a variety of fields attended the Summer School. Each year we welcome groups from organisations such as the Bank of England, the European Commission, Dutch Ministry of Finance, Bank of Italy and the United Nations.
Gain credit towards your degree
Institutions all over the world grant credit for Summer School courses. While ultimately it is up to your home institution as to how much credit is awarded, generally our courses are awarded 3 credits in the US system and 7.5 ECTS in the European system. Study in one of the world's most exciting cities
Seeing the world and experiencing other cultures is an essential learning experience; London is one of the most exciting and culturally-diverse cities in the world. With impressive architecture, world-class galleries and museums and great food and nightlife, London remains one of the world's top tourist destinations, and is the European financial capital. Being a part of LSE Summer School will give you the opportunity to study and live centrally in one of the leading global cities in the world.
International experience is an impressive part of any CV and, in addition to the personal growth that comes with overseas travel, being able to include study at one of the world's top universities helps Summer School alumni stand out from the crowd.
While the main focus of your time at LSE will be your studies, you will also have the chance to relax with your fellow students outside of class. An organised social programme will give you a chance to see some of the sights of London. Some of the events held in 2011 included trips to the theatre, day-trips to Cambridge and Oxford, and the ever-popular Disco Boat parties.
Professor Judith Rees
Director of LSE
The LSE is the leading specialist social science institution in the world. We have built up that reputation in the 116 years since our foundation in 1895.
Throughout that time we have been committed to following our motto – understanding the causes of things (rerum cognoscere causas, for the classical scholars among you)!
Our faculty are leading researchers and teachers in their fields. They are also actively involved in policy issues with governments around the world, and with international organisations. The LSE tradition is one of engagement with decision makers in the public and private sectors. It is not an "ivory tower".
The Summer School offers an opportunity for you to share this tradition of excellence and engagement. Our courses in Accounting and Finance, Economics, English, International Relations, Government and Society, Law and Management will give you an insight into leading-edge thinking in each discipline and will cause you to reflect on the big issues of the day. We look forward to welcoming you to the School.

Welcome to the 2012 LSE Summer School
|
For well over two decades, LSE Summer School has provided a unique opportunity for students and professionals to catch up with the latest developments in the social sciences. What began as an experiment in the late 1980s has grown into the largest Summer School in Europe - one that provides an extraordinary menu of top-level courses ranging from Management and Economics to Sociology and Anthropology, from International Relations and Government to Finance, Accounting and Law. The 2012 programme, which features a number of new courses and a stellar line-up of lecturers, promises to be another exciting and stimulating experience.

Located in the heart of London in one of the world's most prestigious universities, the Summer School has in effect been able to do what many might once have thought impossible: reproduce the full 'LSE experience'. Principally taught in our award winning New Academic Building and Clement House by LSE faculty, it has become a central part of the LSE calendar - so much so that many of those who attend Summer School courses then go on to study at the LSE full-time. But whatever your choice of course, you can be sure of one thing: the Summer School will provide you with an invaluable experience that will contribute either to your degree or enhance your professional career, or both!
Based on regular undergraduate courses taught at LSE, the Summer School programme is academically challenging and socially enriching. For three weeks - or even six if you do two courses - you can engage with world class teachers and mix with a truly diverse mix of participants drawn from over 100 countries with an eclectic range of backgrounds. Although many of you will be graduates or undergraduate students, the Summer School also attracts significant professional representation. Indeed, we have welcomed participants from the United Nations, the European Union, the Bank of England and several government ministries around the world.
In the end, however, the success of Summer School depends on a critical partnership between you the student and us the faculty at LSE; and you can be sure that those who teach you will be experts in their chosen fields. Committed to providing you with an intellectually rigorous programme informed by the most advanced academic research, our courses combine both academic excellence and contemporary relevance. Many of our lecturers have experience in the wider policy world - very much in the LSE tradition - and have acted or continue to act as advisers and consultants to corporations, governments and international organisations.
So welcome to LSE Summer School as an integral member of the wider LSE academic community. Enjoy your courses. Participate in the many other activities we are putting on, including world-class speakers in the Public Lectures series. And take advantage of the expanded social programme we have organised for you. Above all, discuss and relax with your fellow participants and teachers in a convivial and interactive city campus environment where you can expect to develop friendships that, hopefully, will last a lifetime.
