LSE Summer School offers over 60 three-week courses taught by LSE's world-renowned faculty. All courses take place on our campus in the heart of Central London.
Courses can often be taken for credit towards degrees at other institutions, and are examined to LSE standards. Summer School courses are drawn from across the university, and are divided into six subject areas:
Course Levels
100 level courses (e.g. AF101, IR160) are equivalent to introductory level university courses. They have no specific prerequisites in their own subject but may require some mathematics or other related subjects.
200 level courses (e.g. IR201, EC260) are equivalent to intermediate level university courses. They have prerequisites in the form of university level introductory courses in the same, or a closely related, subject.
300 level courses (EC351, AF360) are advanced and equivalent to either final year undergraduate or first year graduate courses. They have prerequisites of university level intermediate courses.

LSE Summer School courses are full-time, intensive programmes, and consist of at least 48 contact hours over the three-week period, generally taking the form of 36 hours of lectures and 12 hours of tutorial or seminar-based classes.
Due to the intensive nature of the programme, students are expected to spend a full day on campus. Lectures are attended by all students on the course, and take place either in the morning (10am - 1pm) or afternoon (2pm - 5pm), at the same time each day. They are supplemented by small one hour classes, during the following afternoon or morning. These are an opportunity to work through problem sets or case studies, or present and discuss seminar papers. In addition, students are recommended to spend 2-3 hours per day in self-guided study.
Timetables are issued at the beginning of the programme. It is not possible to know the expected hours of a particular course before the programme starts. It is not possible to change either the lecture time or the allocated class time, however course changes are permitted within the first two days of the session.
Assessment for Summer School courses is based upon the results of either two formal examinations or a combination of formal examination and assessed work. Examinations are two hours in length and are conducted under standardised LSE examination regulations.
Credit
Many universities accept LSE Summer School qualifications as credit towards their own degrees, and the Summer School office is happy to assist in any way we can. However, students are advised to contact their home university before coming to Summer School, as the decision to award credit rests with them.
All students will be provided with a certificate, after the programme has finished.
