About Accounting and Finance at LSE

Both the Department of Accounting and the Department of Finance enjoy a pre-eminent reputation for the excellence of their teaching and research and for their leading role in public-policy issues. They rank alongside the most highly-rated departments in accounting and finance worldwide, with accounting having been taught at the LSE since 1896.

The study of accounting and finance at the LSE emphasises the important ways in which these subjects contribute to the functioning of modern managerial and economic systems. Accounting is more than a computational skill; courses focus on how both accounting and finance are deeply involved in the process by which management perceives, understands and seeks to change and control the nature of organisations. Students are encouraged to adopt a critical and flexible viewpoint. Similarly finance is more than a quantitative subject. It offers real insight into business and economic behaviour, in ways which go beyond simple model building. Our courses show the importance of interdisciplinary perspectives and reflect the international and changing dimensions of the subject.

Our diverse faculty comes from across the globe, providing a rich environment in which to research and study accounting and finance. Among our staff are internationally acknowledged leaders in academic research, professional accountancy, and financial markets.
