About Economics at LSE

LSE's Economics Department is one of the largest in the world. It has an outstanding international reputation based on its research and publications and is acknowledged as the leading faculty in Europe. Seven Nobel Prize winners have at one time been on its staff. The atmosphere of intellectual vitality is reflected in its teaching activities and pioneering research work. The LSE hosts three major UK research centres in economics: the Centre for Economic Performance, the Suntory Toyota International Centre for Economics and Related Disciplines and the Financial Markets Group. Some of the world's top economics journals (Econometrica, The Journal of Public Economics, Economica, The Review of Economic Studies and The Journal of Transport Economics) are, or have recently been, edited at the LSE.

The Economics programme offers not so much a set of summer courses as a small-scale degree programme; its objective is to provide economics teaching which is as good as that offered by the best university courses anywhere in the world. Its hallmark is the emphasis on the core subjects of theoretical and applied economics, and these courses are taught by regular LSE teachers, familiar with recent developments in their subjects. Courses in economics can therefore provide a valuable supplement to a university degree.

However the appeal of the Economics programme is not restricted to those with backgrounds in economics. We are delighted to continue to welcome individuals from professions as varied as banking, law, medicine, engineering, government administration and research, who wish to attain a fundamental grounding in the principles of economics.

We are sure that you will find the programme interesting and relevant to your professional or academic needs. We will, of course, be happy to provide any assistance or guidance that you may require.
