LSE was founded by a legacy. In 1895, Beatrice and Sidney Webb established the School with the help of a bequest from Henry Hunt Hutchinson to the Fabian Society.
Since then, the support of alumni and friends has continued to make a lasting difference to the next generations of students who continue the School's legacy of enabling understanding and change.
Legacy gifts are of huge importance to the School and have an invaluable impact on every aspect of life at LSE: supporting some of the best and brightest students, attracting talented academics and developing contemporary campus facilities.

'This scholarship has really changed my life. But it hasn't just done that. I believe it will change my children's lives and their children's and so on. When I finish my degree I want to do something to help make the world a better place. The driving force behind this will always be my debt to Peter Bence, my gratitude for his generosity and the school's faith that I am a worthy recipient of it.'
Emma Cardwell (BSc Environmental Policy student),
Bence Legacy Scholar, UK
