The Turing University Network

The LSE is a member of the Turing University Network. A network of 65 universities which facilitates connections across the UK data science and AI research and teaching community.

Founded by the Alan Turing Institute in 2023, the network provides a structure for UK universities to facilitate better connections and collaboration with one another and showcase their data science/AI activity. It also provides universities and their staff and students with opportunities to engage with various Turing Institute departments and teams. The network is a key component of the Turing Institute's Strategy aimed at changing the world for the better with data science and AI.

The Alan Turing Institute, headquartered in the British Library, London, was created as the national institute for data science in 2015. In 2017, as a result of a government recommendation, artificial intelligence was added to their remit.

The institute’s purpose is to make the UK the best place in the world for data science and AI research, collaboration, and business.

The Turing has three ambitious goals:

  • to advance world-class research and apply it to national and global challenges,
  • to build skills for the future,
  • to drive an informed public conversation.

The Data Science Institute manages the relationship with the Alan Turing Institute on behalf of the LSE. We send out a weekly newsletter to share news and opportunities from the Turing institute and its university network with LSE academics and PhD students. This relationship is overseen by:

Turing Academic Liaison
Professor Zoltán Szabó, Professor of Data Science, LSE Department of Statistics
DSI.Turing.Academic@lse.ac.uk.

Turing Administrative Liaison
Emily Cruz, Communications and Events Manager at the DSI
DSI.Turing.Admin@lse.ac.uk.

Alan Turing Institute Events and Seminars

Turing organise and host a range of talks, workshops, seminars and conferences which colleagues can register to attend and / or participate in. The events are designed to teach, engage, and inspire people with all levels of data science and artificial intelligence experience. A full listing of events is available on the Turing website.

Many of Turing’s events are also recorded and you can browse the video archive on their YouTube channel.
