Occasional Research Assistant (ORA) – The Latin American and Caribbean Inequality Review

JOB DESCRIPTION

The International Inequalities Institute (III) at the London School of Economics and Political Science (LSE) is seeking a part-time, temporary, hourly paid occasional research assistant (ORA) to work from late February or early March 2025 for 12 months. The ORA will support Professor Francisco H. G. Ferreira on The Latin American and Caribbean Inequality Review (LACIR).

LACIR is an academic initiative exploring why, despite significant structural changes in economic and social contexts, inequality in Latin America and the Caribbean remains exceptionally high. The review addresses inequality across multiple dimensions—including income, wealth, education, health, and political power—and has produced 27 academic papers that will soon be published in Oxford Open Economics as an Open Access supplement. With this milestone approaching, LACIR is entering its second phase, which will focus on producing a synthesis volume outlining the main messages of the review for a general audience.

This role offers the chance to develop professional skills in project coordination, communication of academic content to general audiences, and experience in the process of academic publishing. The ORA will also gain exposure to a unique network of experts who are leaders in the field of inequality.

 DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

The ORA will serve as the primary LACIR secretariat staff, responsible for managing timelines, coordinating activities, and ensuring the smooth progression of the second phase of the project.

Key responsibilities include:

  • Coordinate and ensure the timely progress of the LACIR second volume, working in close collaboration with a team of leading academics in the field of inequality research.
  • Organise workshops, conferences, and public events for academic and general audiences.
  • Manage the dissemination efforts of the Review. This includes drafting and editing content for non-specialist readers.
  • Maintain and update the LACIR website, draft newsletters, and manage social media accounts to promote LACIR outputs.
  • Assist with the publication process, support communication with the editorial team, review proofs, and ensure deliverables are met as required.

DELIVERABLES

The main deliverables include a timeline and archive for the second volume of LACIR, along with content for newsletters, social media, and the LACIR website tailored to academic and general audiences.

PERSON SPECIFICATION

This role requires a good level of understanding of the inequality literature, and of Latin America’s region-specific problems; strong organisational and communication skills, the ability to work independently, and attention to detail in managing complex projects.

The ideal candidate will:

  • Hold a postgraduate degree (or be working towards one) in Economics or a related field.
  • Demonstrate a strong interest in inequality, particularly in Latin America and the Caribbean.
  • Have excellent organisational and project management skills.
  • Be skilled at writing and editing content for general audiences, with the ability to communicate complex ideas clearly and accessibly.
  • Be comfortable working with diverse stakeholders, including academics, funders, and public audiences.
  • Be fluent in English, with proficiency in Spanish or Portuguese highly desirable.

REMUNERATION

The position is paid at no less than Band 5 Step 18 (£23.23 per hour, including accrued holiday pay) for up to 8 hours per week. The position requires the ORA to be based in the UK, with a right-to-work check at LSE before starting.

If you are interested, please send a CV and a brief email outlining why you would be suitable for the post (max 500 words) to f.d.ferreira@lse.ac.uk and v.v.contreras@lse.ac.uk containing “ORA application” in the subject line as soon as possible, but no later than Monday 10 February 2025, 5:30 pm GMT. Interviews with shortlisted applicants will take place virtually on Thursday 13 February and Friday 14 February 2025.
