  • Vassilis Monastiriotis participated at the Macedonia2025 Summit, which took place on 18 November 2021 in a hybrid format, with a focus on boosting economic growth and showcasing regional success stories, with digitalization as a cross-cutting theme. You can watch the video here.
  • Will Bartlett gave a presentation during the Conference 'Social Entrepreneurship and its importance for vulnerable groups', organised by UNICEF Sarajevo  (30 September -1 October 2021, Sarajevo)
  • Will Bartlett edited and co-authored two reports on labour markets and youth employment policies in the Western Balkans for the RCC - Regional Cooperation Council. (June 2021)
  • Will Bartlett gave a presentation on 'The contribution of the digital economy and skills to local economic development in the EUSAIR region' at the online workshop 'Smart Specialisation Strategy (S3) in the Adriatic – Ionian Macro-Regional Strategy (EUSAIR)', organised by the Centre for Innovation and Entrepreneurship of the Università Politecnica delle Marche in collaboration with REDETE (Researching Economic Development and Entrepreneurship in Transition Economies). Event was supported by LSEE, LSE Social Policy, STICERD, LSE ID, UNDP and CBIT. 20 February 2018. Dr Enkeleida Tahiraj co-organised the events.

  • Dr Peter Sanfey spoke at the 13th Annual Cyprus Summit entitled “Europe on the move – Cyprus in the fast lane?”, Nicosia, 1-2 November, 2017.

  • Dr Simona Guerra was an invited speaker at the Cambridge Baltic Conference 'When populism meets Euroscepticism: the European case', University of Cambridge, 28 October 2017.

  • Dr Vassilis Monastiriotis presented his project titled “Between government failure and failed government: the Greek-Eurozone crisis in analytical perspective” at the CES Visiting Scholars seminar, Center for European Studies, Harvard University, on 25 October 2017.

  • In October Dr Max Fras worked with the Lebanese Ministry of Social Affairs and the Ministry of Youth and Sports in Beirut on reforming the country's youth policy, notably the consultative role of young people in the policy cycle and the mandate of the Lebanese Youth Forum.

  • Dr Max Fras facilitated a seminar on cross-sectoral approaches to Roma inclusion in education, youth work and training in Europe, to be held in Bucharest in co-operation with the European Commission's SALTO Social Inclusion Resource Centre and the Romanian National Agency for Community Programmes in the Field of Education and Vocational Training (ANPCDEFP), October 2017.

  • Dr Vassilis Monastiriotis will be attending the reception for the 2017 Excellence in Education and Teaching Promotion Awards at LSE, following his receipt of one of the Excellence in Education awards, 18 October 2017.

  • Dr Peter Sanfey was a panellist at an international conference on the occasion of the 20th Anniversary of the Central Bank of Bosnia and Herzegovina in Sarajevo, 22nd September.

  • Dr Simona Guerra gave an invited keynote speech to the Conference of European Churches Conference for Church and Ecumenical Communicators in Paris, 21-22 September (on my forthcoming book on Religion and Euroscepticism in Post-Communist Europe).

  • Dr Enkeleida Tahiraj taught  ‘Beyond the Western European Union welfare states – Social Policy Innovations and a case for Universal Basic Income’ at the LSE Executive Masters course on 'The Political Economy of Welfare State reform', a course run by Dr. Waltraud Schelkle, LSE, in September 2017.

  • Dr Peter Sanfey participated and made introductory remarks at a presentation of a report entitled “China’s Belt and Road Initiative - Constructing the Balkan Silk Road” by Dr. Jens Bastian, hosted by the South-East Europe & the Asian Studies Programmes of the Hellenic Foundation for European and Foreign Policy (ELIAMEP) in Athens, 14th September.

  • Dr Enkeleida Tahiraj was invited to a Chevening scholars event for new students hosted by the British Embassy in Tirana on September 7, 2017.

  • Dr Vassilis Monastiriotis presented two papers titled ‘Regional needs, regional targeting and regional growth: an assessment for the UK regions in 1994-2003’ and ‘Speak your weight: examining the meaning of spatial autocorrelation in the analysis of spatial processes’ at the 57th Annual Congress of the European Regional Science Association in Groningen, Netherlands, 29 August-1 September 2017.

  • Dr Vassilis Monastiriotis presented two papers titled ‘Spatial differences in the returns to education: sorting, agglomeration and pressures of demand’ and ‘Regional needs, regional targeting and regional growth: an assessment for the UK regions in 1994-2003’ the 46th Annual Conference of the British and Irish Section of the Regional Science Association International in Harrogate, UK, 23-24 August.

  • Dr Enkeleida Tahiraj became a member of the Expert Reference Group in June 2017, which will oversee a 2 years study on "Understanding impacts of human trafficking from Albania, Vietnam and Nigeria", to be carried out by the University of Bedfordshire and the International Organisation of Migration. The role entails overseeing and advising on research methods, literature review, research ethics and and overall quality of empirical work, findings and subsequent publications. The study is expected to be completed by April 2019.

  • Dr Vassilis Monastiriotis was an invited speaker in The Aspen Germany Western Balkans conference on “Improving Perspectives for the Youth: Economic Development and Job Creation in the Western Balkans”, speaking on the theme of ‘How Could Economic Development Be Better Included in the EU Enlargement Agenda’, June 19-22, 2017.

  • Dr Will Bartlett and Prof Milica Uvalic, University of Perugia, presented a paper on “Higher Education and the Graduate Labour Market in the Western Balkans” at the 80th Anniversary Conference of the Faculty of Economics, University of Belgrade, Belgrade, 16 June 2017.

  • Dr Will Bartlett presented a paper at the Annual Joint Science Conference of the "Berlin Process", Paris, 15 June 2017.

  • Dr Will Bartlett participated in the conference of the International Inequalities Institute, LSE, jointly with Gorana Krstic, Jelena Zarkovic Rakic, and Nermin Oruc, presenting a paper on inequalities in the successor states of former Yugoslavia, 14 June 2017.

  • Dr Simona Guerra was invited to a workshop organized by the Institute for German Studies as part of the launch of C. Galpin's book, The Euro Crisis and European Identities: Political and Media Discourse in Germany, Ireland and Poland, at the University of Birmingham. She presented the paper 'Identity, Economic Rationality or Political Cues: The Case of Poland', 13 June 2017.

  • Dr Enkeleida Tahiraj  spoke at an experts meeting on issues related to Country of Origin Information (COI), in particular, the research methodology, consistency of information, corroborating evidence, disaggregation of national statistics, finding reliable information sources and stakeholder consultations and emphasised that reliable evidence should inform policy to mitigate the risks of COIs turning into policy based evidence documents. The event on reviewing development and use  of COIs  took place at the office of the Independent Chief Inspector of Borders and Immigration, June 12, 2017.

  • Tena Prelec participated as a panellist in the ‘How to Blog Your PhD/Research’ workshop at the LSE PhD Academy, 12 June 2017.

  • Tena Prelec co-lead, together with Artemis Photiadou, LSE Government, a workshop on research impact and academic blogging at a Summer School, University of Edinburgh, 6 June 2017. 

  • Dr Enkeleida Tahiraj was a keynote speaker on "Research and policy considerations on Country of Origin Policy and Information Guidance (COI) and it's reliability as a reference document in asylum application cases", at the Conference on Complexities surrounding unaccompanied minors from Albania living in the UK, held at UCL, June 6, 2017.

  • Dr Eli Gateva attended as a key note speaker the fourth edition of the “Security in the Black Sea Region. Shared Challenges, Sustainable Future” Programme, which will take place in Romania, during May 28-June 2, 2017. The program is organized by the National Intelligence Academy “Mihai Viteazul” Romania via the National Institute for Intelligence Studies, in partnership with Harvard University (US) and with the collaboration of the National Intelligence University (NIU - US).

  • Dr Vassilis Monastiriotis was an invited speaker in a Workshop on “The role of structural funds in EU economic governance: towards increased structural reforms and macroeconomic conditionality?”, organised by the European Policy Centre (EPC), 31 May 2017.

  • Dr Vassilis Monastitiotis  attended, as part of the Scientific Committee, a conference on “Economic development in Southern European Regions: Policies and higher education”, organised by EDULOG (Belmiro de Azevedo Foundation) in association with the Regional Science Association International at the University of Porto, 25-26 May, 2017.

  • Tena Prelec presented a paper on the political attitudes of the Serbian diaspora at the 2nd Annual Conference of the Western Balkans Migration Network - “Migration in the Western Balkans: What do we know?”, Sarajevo, 19-20 May 2017.

  • Dr Will Bartlett attended the conference “Challenges of Europe”, organised by the University of Split, at Bol on the Island of Brac, Croatia, where he will participate as an invited speaker on a panel on "Decentralisation in Croatia”, 17-19 May 2017.

  • Dr Max Fras presented a paper titled ‘Ukraine’s Youth Policy and the Situation of Young People in Light of the EU Youth Policy Indicators’ in an International conference on EU-Ukraine co-operation in the field of youth policy and civil society development, organised by the European University Viadrina, Robert Bosch Foundation, Berlin, Germany, May 19, 2017.

  • Dr Max Fras presented a paper titled ‘Challenges to Intercultural Competence Development in European Youth Work and Education’ at the Conference ‘Good Connections - Social Sciences and Divided Communities’, Zielona Gora, Poland, May 15-17, 2017.

  • Dr Will Bartlett  made a presentation titled “Goodbye Tito: The role of diverging welfare state trajectories on income inequality in four former Yugoslav republics”, a new project funded under the Atlantic Fellows Programme. The project will be carried out jointly with Dr Nermin Oruc (Sarajevo), Dr Jelena Zarkovic Rakic (Belgrade) and Dr  Gorana Krstic (Belgrade).

  • Dr Will Bartlett was appointed as a member of an Expert Panel for accreditation of PhD programmes in Croatia, by the Agency for Science and Higher Education. Dr Bartlett visited the University of Rijeka and University of Pula from May 8-11 2017.

  • Dr Vassilis Monastiriotis completed a study for the Regional Cooperation Council (Sarajevo), led by the Foundation for the Advancement of Economics (FREN, Belgrade) on “Regional Analysis of Employment and Social Measures in the Western Balkans”, April 2017.

  • Dr Spyros Economides attended the first Study Day devoted to improving and updating the understanding of the Balkans region, organised by the Allied Joint Force Command, at Naples, 23 February, 2017. The Study Day involved some 140 participants from across NATO, Allies, the European Union and other partner organizations, all informed by some of the leading contemporary scholars of the region.

  • Dr Will Bartlett has started work on a new research project funded by the European Commission on “Special Economic Zones in the Western Balkans and their Impact on Local Economic Development”.
