LSE continues to be ranked second in the world - and top in the UK and Europe- for social science and management subjects, according to an international league table published today.

The QS World University Rankings by Subject, which rates universities around the world in a range of areas, placed 13 LSE disciplines in the global top ten.

Notably, LSE was ranked the second in the world for Geography, while Media & Communications and Social Policy were both ranked third globally.

Commenting on the rankings, LSE Director Minouche Shafik said: “This is richly-deserved recognition for our staff, students and the wider LSE community, and is a good reflection of the School’s position as a world-leading academic institution which also makes a substantial contribution to public life.

"Strong performances in league tables are always welcome but LSE’s priorities remain resolute:  to ensure we provide the very best teaching for our students and produce research which helps transform the world for the better.”

Published annually since 2011, QS World University Rankings by subject are based on academic reputation, employer reputation and research impact. The rankings are based on an analysis of 198 million citations, and the insights of 40,000 hiring managers and over 70,000 academics.

The School achieved the following global rankings in individual subjects:

  • Second in the world for Geography.
  • Third in Social Policy and Administration and Communication and Media Studies (LSE was also ranked first in the UK for Communication and Media Studies).
  • Fourth in Anthropology and Sociology.
  • Fifth in Politics & International Studies and Accounting and Finance Studies.
  • Seventh in History, Development Studies and Economics & Econometrics (LSE was also ranked first in the UK for Economics & Econometrics).
  • Eighth in Philosophy.
  • Ninth in Law, and Business and Management Studies.

LSE also was ranked fifth in the UK and 28th in the world for Statistics, and seventh in the UK and 35th in the world for Psychology.
