Minouche Shafik discusses the value of international students and staff at LSE
This week LSE Director Minouche Shafik launched the new Double Degree in European and International Public Policy and Politics at Bocconi University in Milan, alongside Mario Monti, Bocconi University President, featuring a contribution from Michel Barnier, European Chief Negotiator for the United Kingdom Exiting the European Union (EU).
From the academic year 2019-2020, successful graduates will gain two distinct degrees following the two-year programme: MSc European and International Public Policy from the European Institute at LSE, and the Bocconi MSc in Politics and Policy Analysis.
The double degree combines the strengths of LSE and Bocconi, with a focus on quantitative methods and policy evaluation during the first year at Bocconi, and on a critical and multidisciplinary analysis of current governance issues in the second year at LSE's European Institute.
Prior to the launch event, Minouche Shafik said: “We are delighted to launch the Double Degree program between LSE and Bocconi University. The combination of expert teaching from both institutions across the social sciences will give students a global perspective on the many challenges confronting Europe and its neighbours.”
Bocconi Rector Gianmario Verona said: “Now more than ever, politics and governance are transnational topics, to be tackled combining different expertise and angles, and the European Union is indisputably the most important experience of transnational governance of our times. We are happy to trigger this cooperation with one of the schools with the best reputation in the world.”
At the event itself, Minouche Shafik discussed the rise of populism and the impact of Brexit on universities, while reiterating LSE’s support for EU staff and students. She said: “Thirty seven per cent of our faculty are EU nationals, and they are critical to the vitality of our research and teaching. We are doing everything we can to encourage government policies that enable us to retain our valued EU colleagues and students, and enable us to recruit even more of them.”
Appearing in a pre-recorded message at the launch event Michel Barnier highlighted the value of the new degree as the UK prepares to leave the EU. He said: “The launch of this double degree is important. It shows that two of our most prestigious universities, one on the continent, one in Britain, but both in Europe, will continue to work together.”
