LSE announces appointment of new President and Vice Chancellor

LSE is delighted to announce the appointment of Larry Kramer as its new President and Vice Chancellor. 

Larry Kramer will formally begin his role as LSE’s eighteenth President and Vice Chancellor in April 2024.

Currently President of the William and Flora Hewlett Foundation, Larry Kramer is a renowned scholar of constitutional law and history. He was previously Richard E. Lang Professor of Law and Dean of Stanford Law School 2004-2012, and Associate Dean for Research and Academics and Russell D Niles Professor at New York University Law School 1994-2004. He was a Professor at the University of Chicago Law School and University of Michigan Law School, as well as Visiting Professor at Columbia Law School and Harvard Law School.  

A fellow of the American Academy of Arts and Sciences, and a member of the American Philosophical Society, he is the author of numerous articles and books, including The People Themselves: Popular Constitutionalism and Judicial Review. Larry also serves as board chair of iCivics, a non-profit organisation that promotes civic education, and as a director on the boards of various other non-profit organisations, including the Silicon Valley Community Foundation and the ClimateWorks Foundation.

He brings a wealth of experience and expertise to lead the School in advancing our mission to know the causes of things for the betterment of society. Council and the School Management Committee very much look forward to welcoming Larry to LSE. He will spearhead our ambitious strategy with respect to research, education, and global impact, as well as the positioning of the social sciences in today’s rapidly changing context.

Professor Eric Neumayer will continue to lead the School as the Interim President and Vice Chancellor until the new President takes up his post in 2024.
