About me

Marcelo Ramella is the Deputy Director of the Financial Stability Department of the Bermuda Monetary Authority (BMA), Bermuda’s single financial sector regulator.

Marcelo joined the BMA in 2005 and since then he has held positions in research, policy, international affairs and financial stability. Given the salience of Bermuda’s international reinsurance sector, he has dedicated a wealth of attention to following global developments in those markets, in particular issues relating to innovative practices in reinsurance. He is also involved in the work of the Financial Stability Board and the International Association of Insurance Supervisors (IAIS). At the IAIS he is currently the Vice Chair of the Macroprudential Committee, the Vice-chair of the Core Curriculum Task Force, and a member of the Resolution Working Group. Marcelo has also been Chair of the Reinsurance Task Force, and a member of the IAIS Macroprudential Policy and Surveillance Working Group, the Reinsurance Transparency Group, the Mutual Recognition Subgroup, and the joint World Bank-IAIS Index-based Insurance Working Group.

Since 2010 Marcelo has been invited speaker at the Financial Stability Institute (FSI) of the Bank for International Settlements (BIS), delivering seminars and facilitating case studies on reinsurance innovation and regulation, macroprudential surveillance, and risk-based regulation and supervision. FSI participation has covered global seminars at BIS Headquarters in Basel, Switzerland, and regional seminars throughout Latin America, delivered in Spanish.

Since 2005, Marcelo has been Visiting Fellow at the LSE’s Department of Psychological and Behavioural Science, lecturing Organisational and Social Psychology MSc students on power relations in organisations.

Prior to joining BMA Marcelo held research positions in the United Kingdom with the Home Office and the London School of Economics and Political Science (LSE).

Marcelo is National Public Accountant (Buenos Aires, Argentina). He has a Master in Business Administration from Bocconi University (Milan, Italy), an MSc in Organisational and Social Psychology from the LSE, and a PhD in Social Psychology from the LSE.
