Faculty and (post-doctoral) researchers at CIVICA universities (Bocconi, CEU, EUI, Hertie, LSE, Sciences Po, SNSPA, SSE) were invited to submit proposals for new collaborative research projects under one of CIVICA’s four core themes: Societies in Transition, Crises of Earth; Democracy in the 21st Century; Europe Revisited; Data-Driven Technologies for Social Sciences.
Of the 27 applications 11 were selected for funding for research and knowledge exchange activities that will bring CIVICA partners together under their thematic priorities. LSE is participating in nine of the awarded projects and leading one project.
LSE PI Professor Tomila Lankina said of the award:
“My collaborators Guido Alfani and Mattia Fochesato at Bocconi University, Giovanni Angioni at LSE and Alexander Libman at the Freie Universität in Berlin and I are delighted to have been awarded the CIVICA grant for our project “The Long Shadow of Educational, Skills, and Professional Inequities in Time and in Space: Implications for Polarization and Support for Populism in Europe.” We are thrilled at the opportunity that the new CIVICA initiative has given us: to build bridges across academic institutions and across the disciplines and sub-specialisms of political science, economic history, and historical political economy. Drawing on data and archival material from historical contexts as diverse as Tzarist Russia, medieval and present-day Italy, we are eager to contribute to academic debate and policy on the drivers of inequality and political polarization, and the long-term social consequences of historical shocks like famines and epidemics.”
Professor Simon Hix, Pro-Director for Research at LSE and CIVICA Permanent Design Team Member said:
“I am delighted this first funding call was such a success for LSE, and for CIVICA as a whole. The fact that so many LSE colleagues came forward with research proposals with colleagues from across our alliance partners demonstrates how valuable CIVICA is for the research environment at the School.”
