Watch part one and part two of Aleesha's CIVICA vlogs, and read on for more about her experience in Italy. European Week is a central part of the CIVICA Engage Track for undergraduates interested in civic issues. This year, they worked with CIVICA academics and partner institutions to explore the social impact of sport.

Tell us about your experience at CIVICA European Week. What did you enjoy the most?

Honestly, European Week was a life-changing experience. I networked with so many amazing individuals across Europe and made the best memories, all while gaining valuable life and career experience. Join me in Italy throughout the entire week in my CIVICA vlogs on my educational YouTube channel!

Highlights of the programme included working with Inter Milan and Paralympic Champions, as well as visiting the Global Policy Forum, San Siro Stadium and Milano Cortina! It was incredibly empowering to be able to propose my ideas and solutions for promoting inclusivity to external partners such as Intercampus, Bosch, and Onlus. I intend to use my CIVICA experiences to improve the political economy in which we live.

Sports is more than just sports – it is economics, it is social, it is politics. More importantly, it is truly a powerful means to encourage diversity and inclusion.

What were your motivations for joining the CIVICA European Week?

CIVICA European Week fascinated me as a route into civic engagement because I have always been interested in proposing solutions to real-world problems. As a Jamaican descendant, observing poverty in developing economies inspired me to become a Policy Analyst. My economic policies, I believe, will reflect my diverse upbringing, and represent a wide audience.

CIVICA appealed to me because I want to make a difference, not only through direct policymaking but through workshops, public speeches, and publications that deconstruct economic jargon, offer new ideas, such as more nuanced economic models, and inspire.

As a Debate Mate Mentor and Programme Director, I've already made measures to coach and motivate young people to achieve their goals. This is important to me because as a child, I had few black female role models in government to look up to.

What is your main takeaway from this experience?

The emphasis of the programme this year was "Sport and Social Impact". Before the programme, if I am honest, I had limited interest in sports. At most, I would watch a football or basketball game when my father put it on the television! I can now say that I understand, appreciate, and value the importance and intersectionality of sports.

Throughout the week, hearing from various Paralympic Champions brought a tear to my eye. Hearing from individuals who have accomplished so much while having limitations was extremely motivating. Sports have given many people a way to appreciate the beauty in life. You can hear from these champions in part two of my CIVICA vlog.

Sports is more than just sports – it is economics, it is social, it is politics. More importantly, it is truly a powerful means to encourage diversity and inclusion.

Why should future students apply to take part in the next European Week?

I strongly encourage that any students who are interested in societal issues apply to CIVICA for European Week 2023! If you want to learn more about the programme, feel free to watch my CIVICA vlog on my StudyTube channel. I am also more than happy to answer any questions you may have about the application - best of luck!
