Piroska Nagy Mohácsi is Visiting Professor in Practice at the Firoz Lalji Institute for Africa (FLIA) at the London School of Economics and Political Science (LSE) and Academic Partner of Macroeconomic Advisory Group (MAG), New York. Previously Piroska was Interim Director and Programme Director of the LSE Institute for Global Affairs (2015-2021) leading and managing the institute and its academic programme. Prior to the LSE, Piroska was Director for Policy at the European Bank for Reconstruction and Development (EBRD) (2008-2015); and worked in senior positions in the International Monetary Fund (IMF) (1986- 2008) on macroeconomic surveillance, and led IMF programs in emerging Europe, Russia and other former Soviet Union countries, as well as Africa. She was Senior Adviser at Fitch Ratings in 2003-04 and Visiting Lecturer at the Hebrew University of Jerusalem in 1996-97.
Piroska’s primary research interest is monetary policy, the intersection of monetary and fiscal policy (“policy mix”), financial resilience and innovation, including the regulation of digital currencies, central bank digital currencies (CBDCs), with a special focus on emerging economies and developing countries. She has published widely on these subjects; she is also the author of the book The Meltdown of the Russian State. Piroska is also a senior expert on creating and leading regional and global research and networks: she was the co-creator of the Vienna Initiative, a public-private platform that aims as cross-border financial sector crisis management and regulatory coordination in the EU and emerging Europe; the Alliance of Leading Universities on Migration (ALUM), a cross-regional research and policy cooperation network of more than 20 universities that fosters academic research and policy advice on migration and refugee issues; and the Maryam Forum at the LSE that supports transformational leadership with a collaboration of renowned academics, students, policy makers and business leaders in a number of specific research areas.
