Moral and Political Philosophy for Public Policy

Project Leaders: Jonathan Birch, Susanne Burri, Mike Otsuka, Alex Voorhoeve

Together with Centre visitors and Lachmann fellows, members of the Department of Philosophy, Logic and Scientific Method conduct interdisciplinary research which is aimed at the normative analysis of national and international policies.

Research-led impacts include Lachmann Fellow Marc Fleurbaey’s central contributions to the Stiglitz-Sen-Fitoussi commission on measuring the quality of life, which led to 50 changes in the way Eurostat collects and analyses quality of life data; Alex Voorhoeve’s contributions to a framework to guide resource-constrained countries on the path to universal health coverage, which was endorsed by the WHO Secretary-General in 2016; and Michael Otsuka’s prominent role in shaping the debate on the Universities Superannuation Scheme (USS).

Ongoing research includes Lachmann Fellow Matthew Adler’s work on how "Prioritarianism" (the view that improvements in the well-being of those who are less well off should be given extra weight in policy-making) can be used to guide policy-making, culminating in his new monograph Measuring Social Welfare: An Introduction (2019) ; Susanne Burri’s work in just war theory, including the regulation of autonomous weapons systems; Jonathan Birch’s discussion of the pain of invertebrates and EU rules; and Alex Voorhoeve's multi-year research project in support of Universal Health Coverage in East Africa.
